Robert: Per me la storia di James Dean e Dennis Stock sono due storie completamente diverse. La storia di James Dean, forse perchè ho vissuto fino ad un certo punto, non mi interessa molto. Dall'inizio mi sono identificato con il personaggio di Dennis Stock. / For me the story of James Dean and of Dennis Stock are two completely different stories. The story of James Dean, maybe because I’ve lived it up to a certain point, doesn’t particularly interest me. From the very beginning I identified more with the character of Dennis Stock.
D / Q: Come vedi James Dean? Ti ispiri a lui? / How do you see James Dean? Were you inspired by him?
R: Quasi tutti gli attori passano una fase in cui hanno un ossessione per James Dean. I suoi film hanno un'enorme influenza. Quando puoi controllarlo va bene, ma quando ti fotografono tutto il tempo, perdi il controllo. Improvvisamente hai paura e diventi introverso. Al momento sono in quella fase "Non scattatemi alcuna foto". / I’m very bad at that. There was a time when the first Twilight movie was released, I wanted to show a certain profile. R: Non avrei fatto il film se non avessero trovato la persona giusta per ritrarre James Dean. Quando ho saputo che era Dane, ho voluto fare il film, perchè mi piace e avrei avuto la possibilità di lavorare con qualcuno della mia età, il che succede molto raramente. Il suo ruolo è duro. Specialmente con il trucco e la parrucca. Ha anche dei finti lobi di orecchie. E' stato pazzesco! E' un bravo ragazzo. Nel realtà, la relazione tra James Dean e Dennis Stock è stata molto strana. Erano molto diversi, ma lo siamo anche io e Dane, ma alla fine è andato tutto bene. / I would not have participated in the movie if they hadn't found the right person to portray James Dean. When I found out it was Dane, I wanted to do the movie, because I like him and also I seldom have the chance to play with someone my own age. His role is hard. Especially with the make-up and the wig. He even had fake ear-lobes. It was crazy! But he’s a nice guy. In reality the relationship between James Dean and Dennis Stock was very weird. They were so different but so are Dane and I, but eventually we got along really well.

R: La mia unica esperienza sono i miei amici e la mia famiglia. E' impossibile per me trovare un luogo stabile quando sono in giro otto mesi all'anno. Ho la mia casa a Los Angeles, dove mi sono trasferito da poco, ce l'ho da due anni e non l'ho nemmeno arredata. / I only experience this with my friends and family. It’s impossible for me to find a stable place when I move around eight months a year. I had my house in Los Angeles, from where I moved recently, for two years and I didn't even furnish it.
D / Q: Hai mai avuto un rapporto stretto con un fotografo o giornalista come l'ha avuto Dean? / Did you ever have a close relationship with a photographer or reporter like Dean had?
R: Non con un fotografo. Quando Twilight era appena uscito c'erano dei giornalisti con cui avevo un buon rapporto. C'era un editore di Entertainment Weekly che fece la mia prima intervista e era davvero buono, perchè mi piaceva davvero. Siamo andati in un bar insieme e ci siamo ubriacata; sicuramente qualcosa che non farei ora. Quando hai dato abbastanza interviste un editore può prenderti in un modo diverso per ottenere qualche novità su di te, il che è davvero brutto per te. / Not with a photographer. When Twilight just had been released there were some reporters I had a good relationship with. There was an editor of Entertainment Weekly who took my first interview and it was very good, because I really liked him. We went out together to a bar and became drunk; for sure not something I would do now. When you have already given enough interviews an editor can push you in different ways to get some news out of you that is bad for you.
D / Q: Ti manca poter andare al bar a rilassarti? / Do you miss that you can’t go to a bar to relax?
R: Ha anche a che fare con l'immagine che vuoi mostrare al pubblico. Quando senti molta pressione, capisci che al pubblico non interessa di qualcosa di diverso. Tutto li fa impazzire. Tu dici qualcosa e la reazione a quel qualcosa che faccio è di massa. / Also that has to do with the image you want to show to the public. When you feel so much pressure, you understand that the public doesn’t care about something different. Everything drives them crazy. You say something and the reaction to anything I do is massive.
D / Q: Come ti senti quando la tua vita personale è proiettata come una soap-opera? / How do you feel when your personal life is projected like a soap-opera?
R: E' strano. Sebbene abbia fatto degli sforzi per non parlare della mia vita privata, non fa differenza. Fanno varie cose. Quando sei parte di una storia, in un articolo qualcuno scrive che tu non puoi fare nulla con questo. Perfino quando hanno foto di te, usano semplicemente vecchie foto. L'anno scorso stavo pensando al fatto che non hanno scattato molte foto, quindi non avrebbero dovuto scrivere storie su di me, perchè il pubblico non sarebbe stato interessato ad un articolo senza foto. / It’s weird. Although I have made huge efforts not to talk about my personal life it made no difference. They just made various things up. When you are part of a story, an article someone else writes you can’t do anything about it. Even when they don’t take photos of you, they simply use old photos. Last year I was thinking about the fact that they didn't take any photos anymore, so they wouldn't write stories about me anymore, because the public wouldn't be interested in an article without a photograph.
D / Q: Dennis Stock ha fatto molti sacrifici nella sua vita personale per la sua carriera. Lo farei? / Dennis Stock made a lot of sacrifices in his personal life for his career. Would you do that?
R: Non lo so, ma penso che Dennis Stock finse di aver sacrificato molto. Ma ciò che è accaduto veramente è che era spaventanto di non essere il buon artista che pensava di essere. Quindi cercava delle scuse. La prima cosa che mi attratto della sceneggiatura era che riguardava un padre che non voleva suo figlio. E' personaggio tragico. / I don’t know, but I think that Dennis Stock pretended that he had sacrificed a lot. But what happened is that he himself was scared that he was not such a good artist as he thought he was. So he was looking for excuses. Un periodo di restrizioni. / I’m not really a 50’s type of person. I wouldn’t have had a problem with the 60’s. I’m not very good in denying myself things and that was what the 50’s were about. An era with restraints.
D / Q: Quindi avresti intrapreso una discussione con il regista come fece James Dean? / So you would also have gotten into an argument with the director of the studio like James Dean did?

Ho capito che nelle scorse due settimane che ho intenzione di prendermi cura di ciò. / The last two weeks I said that I won’t wear a cap and use disguises anymore, because it can really drive you crazy when you always dress with the purpose of hiding yourself; that influences you psychologically. I understood that the last few weeks and I’m going to take care of it.
D / Q: Quindi è meglio trovarsi faccia a faccia con i paparazzi? / So it’s better to face the paparazzi?
R: Ad essere onesti, non sono i paparazzi il vero problema. Ricordo che per anni ne ero spaventato. Le persone ti guardano tutto il tempo, senti come se ti giudicassero ed è probabilmente ciò che fanno. Non dovresti controllare cosa dicono di te su Twitter. Questa è la cosa peggiore di tutte. / To be honest, the paparazzi are not really the problem. I remember that for years I was afraid. People look at you all the time, you feel that they judge you and that is probably what they do. You shouldn’t check what they say about you on the internet. That is the worst thing of all.
D / Q: L'hai fatto? / Have you done that?
R: Chiunque l'ha fatto. E' una cattiva abitudine. Se per esempio parlano di te nella stanca accanto alla tue, probabilmente puoi provare a sentire cosa stanno dicendo. E alla fine finisci per non lasciare la tua stanza e navighi su internet. Penso che ciò si debba fare per ricordare chi siete, perchè alla fine vivi in un'altra strana realtà, vivi nelle stanze di hotel tutto il tempo e diventi più o meno un eremita. / Anyone would do that. It’s the worst habit. If for example they talk about you in the room next to you, you’d probably try to listen to what they are saying. And in the end you’ll wind up not leaving your room anymore and surf the internet. I think you have to do this to remind yourself who you are because in the end you live in another weird reality, you live in hotel rooms all the time and you become more or less a hermit.

R: Si, alcuni portano i loro amici e familiari. I miei amici e la mia famiglia hanno i loro lavori. Ma non li vorrei come in tutti i casi. E' un modo sicuro per distruggere un amicizia. E' come dire al tuo amico: "Vieni e fai il mio assistente!". / Yes, some take their friends and family with them. My friends and family have their jobs. But I wouldn’t want them with me anyway. It’s a sure way to destroy a friendship. It’s like you say to your friend: "Come and be my assistant!".
D / Q: E come fai a restare psicologicamente sano di mente? / And how did you stay psychologically sane?
R: Penso di star diventando pazzo (ride). / I think I have gone crazy (laughs).
D / Q: Quando proposte uguali hai ricevuto dopo Twilight e quando importante è stato per te interpretare altri ruoli? / How many similar proposals did you get after Twilight and how important was it for you to play other roles?
R: Dopo Twilight ho fatto solo cose che mi interessavano. Gli ultimi 8 anni c'erano 2-3 sceneggiature che mi piacevano e alla fine non ho ottenuto quei ruoli. Ma non era perchè stavo cercando di muovermi in una determinata direzione. E' solo successo. / After Twilight I only did things that interested me. The last 8 years there were only 2-3 scripts that I liked and in the end I didn't get the roles. But it was not that I was trying to move into a certain direction. It just happened!
D / Q: Qual è la più importante lezione di vita che hai imparato negli ultimi anni? / What is the most important life lesson that you got the last few years?
R: Qualcuno mi ha chiesto quali consigli avrei dato al giovane me. Non lo so. Se dici a te stesso "Non preoccuparti di questo o quello", è sicuro che che ti preoccuperai di qualcos'altro. Abbiamo bisogno di quella paura. Preferisco essere qualcuno che deve affrontare le proprie paure, invece che essere qualcuno che ha l'illusione che non ha paura di niente. Mi piace affrontare gli ostacoli, piccoli come possono essere. / Someone asked me what advice I would give to the younger me. I don’t know. If you say to yourself "Don’t worry about this or that", it’s sure that you would always worry about something else. We need that fear. I prefer to be someone who has to confront his many fears instead of someone who has the illusion he doesn't fear anything. I like to take hurdles, as small as they might be.
D / Q: Cosa ti spaventa? / What are you afraid of?
R: Tutto (ride). Perfino camminare per strada. / Everything (laughs). Even walking in the street.
