Abbiamo la possibilità di avere una breve conversazione con Ashley riguardo il suo nuovo film e su com'è stato essere parte di una delle più grandi saghe per giovani come Twilight. / We got the chance to have a very brief chat with Ashley about her new film and what it was like being a part of one of the biggest teen romance franchises in Twilight.
D / Q: Ti vedremo presto nella commedia horror Burying The Ex dove interpreti Evelyn, una prepotente ex-ragazza psicopatica che torna dalla morte e fa videre al proprio ex-ragazzo un inferno! Perchè hai scelto questo ruolo? / We are about to see you in the comedy horror Burying the Ex where you play Evelyn, a psychotic overbearing ex-girlfriend who comes back from the dead and gives your ex hell! Why did you pick this role?
R / A: Era qualcosa che io non avevo mai fatto prima. Con una trama come questa, penso che con Evelyn vai ad interpretare una specie di Jekyll e Hyde e interpreti entrambi gli estremi con questo personaggio. Per me è stato davvero divertente interpretare qualcuno che è così forte e probabilmente è prepotente, ma da alle persone la sensazione di avere un buon cuore, le cose che lei fa sono piene di insicurezze più che di malizia verso qualcuno. Ciò è stato davvero interessante per me e penso che la fusione tra commedia stravagante e film dell'orrore è qualcosa che non si vede molto spesso, era un trama davvero interessante e unica. Interpretare lo zombie che non è solo un mostro mangiacervello, Evelyn evolve nel mostro, questo è qualcosa che non avevo mai fatto prima. Ero davvero eccitata all'idea di portarlo in vita. / It was absolutely something I had never done even remotely close to it. With a storyline like this I think with Evelyn you get to play a Jekyll and Hyde and you get to play both extremes with this character. For me it was really fun to take someone who is hard strong and is maybe overbearing but kind of ground her and give people the sense that she does have a good heart, the things she is doing is more out of insecurities than having any malice towards anyone. That was really interesting for me and I think the melding of a kind of quirky comedy and a horror film is something you don’t see a lot, it was a really interesting and unique storyline. Playing the zombie that isn’t just this kind of mindless brain eating monster, Evelyn kind of evolves into this zombie, this is something I had not done been before. I was really excited to be able to bring that to life.
D / Q: Evelyn è un pò ossessionata dalla pulizia e dal riciclo, quanto c'è di te stessa nel personaggio? / Evelyn is a bit of an obsessive clean/recycling freak, well until she gets a taste for brains, how much of yourself did you bring to the role?
R / A: (Ride) Ho la capacità di essere così alle volte, ovviamente non così estrema. Perchè lei ha come degli interruttori e passa da davvero dolce e amabile fidanzata ad animale inferocito. Ho fatto delle ricerche su questo e ho provato a capire cosa rende queste persone così. / (Laughs) I have the ability to be like that at times, obviously not as extreme. Because she can have such quick switches and flips, from a really sweet loving girlfriend to being this kind of enraged animal. I spent some time doing some research on that and trying to figure out what makes these people the way they are.
D / Q: Com'è stato lavorare con un regista legendario come Joe Dante? / What was it like working with the legendary director Joe Dante?
R / A: Tutti hanno sentito parlare di Gremlins, quindi riuscire a lavorare con un regista che ha creato qualcosa così è stato molto eccitante per me. Ci siamo seduti e abbiamo fatto un lungo pranzo e parlato del suo film e della sua visione e di cosa egli pensava fosse appropriato per il personaggio. E' di una tale calma, raccolto e dolce, un uomo dolce che mi ha immediatamente messa a mio agio e da cui potevo vedere l'amore per ciò che lui fa nel modo in cui parlava del suo progetto. Dopo essere stata con lui, io ero come 'Ho bisogno di lavorare con quest'uomo'. Sul set è stata davvero una bella esperienza. Ha creato immediatamente questo ambiente sicuro per noi, e naturalmente, aveva questa forte visione per cui collaborava con noi e con le idee che io, Anton o Alexandra avevamo per i nostri personaggi. / Everyone has heard of Gremlins, so being able to work with a director who created something like that was exciting to me. He and I sat down and had a long lunch and talked about his film and his vision and what I thought was appropriate for the character. He is such a calm, collected sweet, sweet man who immediately made me feel extremely comfortable and I could see the love for what he did in the way that he spoke about this project. After being with him I was like 'I need to work with this man'. It was really such a lovely experience on set. He immediately created this safe environment for us and, of course, had this strong vision for the film that was really open to us collaborating any ideas that myself or Anton or Alexandra had for all of our characters.
D / Q: Sei riuscita a divertirti sul set? / Did you manage to have fun on set?
R / A: Beh penso che io, Anton e Alexandra siamo tutti giovani di cuore e quindi ci siamo divertiti molto insieme, abbiamo recitato come se fossimo ancora al liceo (ride). Penso sia la natura del film e questo è così pazzo e così oltraggioso che era nell'insieme molto leggero. / Well I think Anton and I and Alexandra are all young at heart so we had a lot of fun together, we acted like we were still at high school (laughs). I think because of the nature of the film and that it’s just so crazy and outrageous that it was just very light-hearted set.
D / Q: Hai raggiunto il successo grazie ad Alice Cullen in Twilight! Come ci si sente ad essere parte di una delle più grandi saghe per ragazzi del 21esimo secolo? / Your big break came in the form of Alice Cullen in Twilight! What does it feel like to be part of one of biggest teen romance franchises in the 21st century?
R / A: (Ride) Sicuramente mi rende ancora strana. E' passato un pò da quando abbiamo finito e siamo stati parte di questo per 5 o 6 anni. E' stato una grande parte della mia vita. E' ancora pazzesco pensarci, è qualcosa che nemmeno nei miei sogni avrei pensato potesse accadere. Non mai visto un film che abbia attratto la gente nel modo in cui ha fatto Twilight, quindi esserne parte è stato incredibile. E' qualcosa che sono sicura non accadrà mai più (ride). E' stato emozionante, ad un certo punto avevamo le riprese in così tanti luoghi che se non dovevamo girare, viaggiavamo per le promozioni in giro per il mondo. In alcuni momenti è stato estenuante ma è stata solo una di quelle cose che tu fai solo per quello, perchè sai che non avrai un'altra opportunità di nuovo. / (Laughs) it definitely it’s still kind of like mind boggling. It’s been a while since we wrapped it and we obviously were a part of it for 5 or 6 years. It was a large portion of my life out here. It really is still crazy to think about it, it’s something I never in my wildest dreams could even think would happen. I’ve never seen another film affect people the way that Twilight did, so to be a part of that it was just incredible. It’s something I am sure will never happen again (laughs). It was thrilling, at some point we were filming with so many places to go if we weren’t on set we were travelling doing press and travelling around the world. At some points gruelling but it was just one of those things where you just go for it because you know you’re not going to get this opportunity again.
D / Q: Quando hai firmato, avresti mai immaginato che sarebbe stato così grande? / When you first signed up for it did you ever imagine it would be as big as it was?
R / A: No, penso che nessuno l'avesse fatto. Lo stavamo girando come se fosse un film indipendente. Poi tutto è cambiato e siamo entrati in questo grande franchise. Penso che nessuno di noi fosse pronto per questo. Sapevo di entrare in qualcosa di speciale per questo e conoscevo l'effetto che i libri avevano avuto su di me e che i libri hanno fatto abbastanza bene e che è la ragione per cui siamo riusciti a fare il film, ma no, non avevo assolutamente idea di cosa sarebbe diventato. / No, I don’t think anyone did. We were doing like an independent film on the first one, then all of a sudden it just snowballed into this humongous franchise. I don’t think any of us were quite ready for it. I knew going into it something felt special about it and I knew the effect the books had on me and that the books did quite well and that was the reason we were able to make this film but no I had absolutely no idea it would turn into what it did.
D / Q: Quell'opportunità ti ha aperto altre porte? / Has that opportunity opened many more doors for you?
R / A: Assolutamente, penso che chiunque abbia fatto Twilight abbiamo avuto un piedistallo di lancio. E' stato essenzialmente il mio primo lavoro, davvero, avevo fatto un paio di ruoli in serie televisive, ma è stata la mia prima volta in un grande film e se poi prendi in considerazione quello che si è rivelato con quello che è accaduto, credo sia stato tutto pazzesco. Vi è certamente lo stemma di Twilight che è venuto con esso e che, tutti sanno, è venuto con la fama e con quello per cui siamo stati conosciuti per 5 anni. Quindi è difficile uscire da quell'ombra, ma devi guardare ad essa e dire 'Non avrei avuto molte altre opportunità che ho avuto se non avessi fatto quel film'. / Absolutely, I think anyone who did Twilight has created huge pedestals to jump off of. It was essentially my first job really, I did a couple of day player roles on televisions shows, but it was my first time being on a movie set and then you take into account what it turned into and what happened and it was just like a crazy reality I guess. There certainly is that Twilight stigma that came along with it as that’s what everyone knows what skyrocketed into fame and into the spotlight that’s definitely what we were known for, for 5 years. So it’s kind of hard to get out of that shadow, but you have to look at it and say 'I wouldn’t have so many of the opportunities that I have if I hadn’t of done that film'.
D / Q: Ho letto da qualche parte che ti piacerebbe interpretare un supereroe, quale sarebbe il ruolo dei tuoi sogni e perchè? / I read somewhere that you would love to play a superhero, what would be your dream role to play and why?
R / A: Io voglio qualcuno che arrivi con un tipo di film d'azione con supereroi femminili. E' appena uscito il video game Batman Arkham Night, quindi penso che sarebbe divertente essere in un film di Batman. / I really want someone to come out with a very strong female-driven action type superhero film. I just released a Batman Arkham Night video game, So I think it would be fun to be in a Batman film for sure.
D / Q: Ti vedrei come Catwoman. / I can see you as a Catwoman.
R / A: Giusto, penso che Michelle Pfieffer abbia fatto un ottimo lavoro, non so se riuscirei a prendere quel ruolo (ride). / Right, I think Michelle Pfieffer did a pretty stand up job, I don’t know if I could take over that (laughs).
D / Q: Cos'altro ha in serbo per te il 2015? / What else has 2015 got in store for you?
R / A: A breve sarà rilasciato il nuovo video gioco di Batman in cui interpreto Oracle, sono eccitata all'idea di essere parte di esso. Ho appena finito un film chiamato In Dubious Battle con James Franco, quindi spero che possiate vederlo presto. / So where about to release the new Batman video game that I played Oracle in so that’s going to be coming out which is really exciting to be a part of. I just finished a film called In Dubious Battle with James Franco so hopefully you can look forward to seeing that soon.
