Robert Pattinson: Si, sono io! / Yes it's me!
Elle Magazine: Sei una delle celebrità più fotografate nel mondo. Ti sei divertito ad interpretare un fotografo? / You are one of the most photographed celebrity in the world. Did you enjoy to play a photographer?
Robert Pattinson: (Ride). Dobbiamo mettere le cose nel giusto contesto. Negli anni 50, non diventavi un fotografo come oggi con i telefoni cellulari, era necessario avere conoscenze tecniche. Era un lavoro che era fatto con nobiltà. / (Laughs). We must put things in context. In the 50s you didn't become photographer like today with mobile phones, it was necessary to have technical knowledge. It was a job that was practised with nobility.
Elle Magazine: Come ti sei esercitato? / How did you practised?
Robert Pattinson: Anton Corbijn mi ha dato una Leica del 1944 e mi ha detto: "Prova a farla diventare un'amica, e vedila come un estensione della tua mano, perchè non la lascierai mai durante le riprese!". / Anton Corbijn gave me a Leica from 1944 and told me: "Try to make him a friend, and sees it as an extension of your hand because you will not leave during the shooting!".
Elle Magazine: Hai scattato qualche foto? / You took some pictures?
Robert Pattinson: Sì. E' stato un disastro. Non volevo mostrarle ad Anton. (Ride. Anton Corbijn è un fotografo molto stimato). / Yes. It was a disaster. I didn't want to show them to Anton (Laughs. Anton Corbijn is a very reputed photographer).
Elle Magazine: Guardando il trailer, ci chiediamo se avresti preferito interpretare James Dean? / Watching the trailer, we wonder if you would have prefered to play James Dean?
Robert Pattinson: Assolutamente no. Dane DeHaan è perfetto per la parte. Io, non ho mai avuto una passione per James Dean. Quando cercavo degli eroi con cui identificarmi, James Dean non era uno di quelli. Apparteneva ad un altro tempo. Non l'ho guardato come hanno fatto tutti. Comunque, Dane sapeva tutto di lui prima del film. / Absolutely not. Dane DeHaan is pefect for the part. Me, I never had a passion for James Dean. When I was looking for heroes to whom identify myself, James Dean was not one of them. He belonged to another time. I didn't look like him at all. However Dane knew all about him before the movie.
Elle Magazine: L'amicizia tra i due uomini è interessante. / The friendship between the two men is interesting.
Robert Pattinson: Il mio personaggio, Dennis Stock, ha solo tre anni in più di James Dean, ma lui ha perso tutta la sua innocenza. E' già un padre, con delle responsabilità, il suo scopo è quello di diventare un artista. Vuole dare il 100 % del suo tempo alla fotografia, e una moglie e dei bambini non sono parte del viaggio. / My character, Dennis Stock, is only 3 years older than James Dean but he lost all his innocence. He is already a father, with responsibilities, his aim is to become an artist. He wants to devote100% of his time to photography, and a wife and children are not part of the journey.
Elle Magazine: Laddove James Dean è ancora un ragazzino ... / Whereas James Dean is still a teenager ...
Robert Pattinson: E' un artista nato. E' un artista nato. Il mondo dei bambini è familiare per lui. In ogni caso, condivide la loro immaginazione. C'è questa magica scena nella fattoria in Indiana dove il mio personaggio sta scattando delle foto a James Dean con il suo giocane cugino. Ho amato questa scena, perchè dovevo mostrare l'invidia e la gelosia. / He is a born artist. He is a born artist. The world of children is familiar to him. In any case he shares their imagination. There is this magic scene in the farm in Indiana where my character is taking pictures of James Dean playing with his young cousin. I loved this scene because I had to show the envy and jealousy.
Elle Magazine: Se James Dean fosse ancora vivo, come avrebbe vissuto l'eccessiva copertura mediatica? / If James Dean was still alive, how would he live his excessive media coverage?
Robert Pattinson: Male, ovviamente. Ciò che accade di questi tempi, puoi farti diventare pazzo. / Badly, of course. What is happening nowadays can make you crazy.
Elle Magazine: E tu? Come vivi questa situazione? / And you? How do you cope with this situation?
Robert Pattinson: Ciò che è terribile è che io sono diventato famoso quando il mondo è cambiato. Nel 2008, tutti avevano un cellulare, era l'esplosione dei social networks. Come risultato, il margine di libertà per proteggere la vita privata è diventato ultra sottile. E' diventato ingestibile. / What is terrible is that i became famous when the world changed. In 2008, everybody had a cell phone, it was the explosion of social networks. As results, the margin of freedom to protect the private life has become ultra thin. Not only were all these paparazzi camping outside my house but this new horde of fans who relayed information on social networks. It became unmanageable.
Elle Magazine: La tua personalità è cambiata? / Has your personality changed?
Robert Pattinson: A un certo punto sono diventato paranoico. Non uscivo da casa mia a Los Angeles. Era l'inferno. Allo stesso tempo, ero consapevole di quanto la situazione fosse ridicola. Non aveva senso. / At some point I became paranoid. I went no moreout of my house in Los Angeles. It was hell. At the same time I was aware of the ridiculousness of the situation. It made no sense.

Robert Pattinson: Preferirei non introdurre il soggetto. / I preferred not to broach the subject.
Elle Magazine: Hai lasciato Los Angeles per vivere a Londra. E' questo amore che ti ha fatto cambiare paese? (E' in coppia con la cantante inglese FKA Twigs). / You left Los Angeles to live in London. Is this love that made you change countries? (He is in a couple with the English singer FKA Twigs).
Robert Pattinson: (Ride). In realtà, vivo tra Los Angeles e Londra. Ma essere a Londra è godimento puro. Mi lasciano in pace! E' lo stesso ovunque in Europa. Robert Pattinson: Sì! Per un grande progetto, ma non posso parlarne perchè non è ancora firmato. Ma io sognavo di lavorare con lei. / Yes! For a great project, but i can't talk about it because it is not signed yet. But I dream of working with her.
Elle Magazine: Quindi è una donna? / So it's a woman?
Robert Pattinson: Oh mio Dio! Ho detto abbastanza! / Oh my God! I have said enough!
Elle Magazine: Quando qualcuno parla di una tua metamorfosi artistica, come la vivi? / When one speaks of artistic metamorphosis about you, how do you live it?
Robert Pattinson: E' un pò esagerato, non pensi? C'è stato ciò che io chiamo "il felice incidente" che era Twilight che mi ha fatto incontrare David Cronenberg. Lavorare con lui mi ha aperto nuove opportunità. / It is a bit exaggerated, don't you think? There has been what I call "the happy accident" that was Twilight, which allowed me to meet David Cronenberg. Work with him open me up to new opportunities.

Now I am doing what i want. Like doing The Childhood of a Leader with my old pal Brady Corbet. This is his first movie as a director.
Elle Magazine: E' il film con Berenice Bejo, giusto? / It's the movie with Bérénice Bejo, isn' it?
Robert Pattinson: Sì. Lei è grande. Mi ha dato un consiglio nutritivo: "Ogni mattina, puoi mangiare e bere ciò che vuoi. Il resto del giorno devi essere attento".
