Molto dipende dal mio umore. Se sono di buon umore, va tutto bene. Quando non lo sono, mi sento seccato. Devi sempre fare attenzione e non comportarti in modo strano o ti sentirai perseguitato. Poi inizi a credere che le persone ti scattano foto, che in realtà hanno di meglio da fare che fare quello. / A lot of it depends on my mood. If I'm in a good mood, everything is okay. When I'm not, I do feel bothered. You have to watch out to not get strange and feel persecuted. Then you start to believe that people take pictures of you, who actually have better things to do with their day than do that.
Lei ha affrontato bene il clamore mediatico di Twilight nei suoi primi vent'anni? / Did you cope well with the media hype of Twilight in your early 20's?
La maggior parte delle volte ero impegnato a nascondermi. Sei sotto shock. Non capisci davvero cosa sta accadendo. La mia crescita personale si è fermata. Era strano: un momento avevo 22 anni e improvvisamente ero cresciuto di 2-3 anni. Lavoraro e facevo molti film durante quel periodo. Era pazzesco. My personal growth was stopped in a way. It was weird: There I was 22 and suddenly I aged 2-3 years. I was working and did a lot of movies during that time. It was madness. Bisogna fare attenzione a non restare bloccati in quel mondo. / The real problem was: you are measured according to a weird criteria when you are part of gigantic expensive movies, which are so under pressure to perform. The question always is: how many millions will that movie make? It's ridiculous! You have to watch out not to get stuck in that world.

Non sono che un sacco di soldi. Non pensi davvero a quello. I soldi non sono l'obbiettivo prima di un giovane attore. E avere abbastanza soldi non è una ragione per uscire. / It's not that much money. You don't really think about it though. Money is not the primary objective of a young actor. And having enough money is no reason to quit.
Qual è il suo obbiettivo ? / What is your goal?
Difficile da dire, ma la strada mi sembra lenta, soprattutto con le mie scelte cinematografiche. Durante Twilight premevo il bottone di reset ogni volta e poi il film successivo veniva rilasciato. / Difiicult to say, but a road is appearing slowly, also with my movie choices. During Twilight l basically pushed the reset button every time and then the next movie would come out.
E poi? / And then?
Ho mosso dei passi attenti nella realtà. Io faccio sempre una rigorosa distinzione: c'è il personaggio che interpreto nel film e la mia vita reale. / I took careful steps into reality. I always strictly distinguished: There was the character that I played in the movies and on the other side my real life.

Adesso provo a fare film più personali, film che hanno più a che fare con me e dove posso avere più controllo. Sto facendo film con autori come David Cronenberg e adesso Anton Corbjin. / Now I try to make more personal movies that have more to do with me and where I have more control. Non credo che un attore riesce a garantire il successo grazie solamente al suo nome. Quei tempi sono finiti, anche se con un paio di eccezioni: una di quelle è Brad Pitt. / Well, l hope the directors do not only pick me just to get financing. I'm also doing very small roles, like in Herzog's "Queen of the Desert" as Lawrence of Arabia. I don’t believe that an actor is able to guarantee success on his name alone. Those times are over, with a few exceptions though: one of those exceptions is Brad Pitt.
