Come giornalista di intrattenimento freelance / scrittore / hack posso dire quanto sia prezioso il tempo di un attore - almeno lo studio gli offre un intervista - in basa alla quantità di tempo che si ha con lui. Altri fattori includono quante persone ha intorno a lui e se o no ti viene chiesto di fare o meno domande personali.Nel caso di Robert Pattinson, lui è abbastanza prezioso. Anche se non mi viene chiesto di non fare domande personali, i pubblicisti sanno che non vado per chiedere quella roba - l'ex star della serie di Twilight trascorre il suo tempo qui al TIFF diviso in quattro minuti, questa è l'esigenza.
Il film per cui Pattinson è qui è Maps To The Stars. E' il suo secondo film con il regista canadese David Cronenberg, dopo Cosmopolis del 2012. Maps To The Stars è scritto da Bruce Wagner. Un ex attore che è stato il co-protagonista con la stella di Maps John Cusack in One Crazy Summer del 1986, Wagner sta diventando un rispettato romanziere e sceneggiatore. Ha fatto anche l'autista di limousine, facendo di lui, a tutti gli effetti, una versione di Jerome.
"Ho pensato fosse divertente e un pò pericoloso", Pattinson dice della sceneggiatura di Wagner. "Mi è piaciuto il fatto che - e anche a David è piaciuto - lui è questo sorta di geniale, uomo accademico. E poi vedendo la sceneggiatura, su due pagine, è così selvaggia che davvero non so come stanno andando ad atterrare in tutto o potrebbe avere walk-out abbastanza facilmente. Adoro sentire gioia di David".
Pattinson dice che ha incontrato Wagner solamente dopo aver girato "la maggior parte della roba" del film, girato a Toronto e Los Angeles.
"Ma poi ho parlato con David riguardo ad essa perchè è una parte strana. Sulla carte è una specie di zero per Bruce e quasi un vuoto per la pagina. Quindi non volevo davvero rivelare la mia ignoranza".
Per quanto riguarda l'ex modella Wasikoswka, Pattinson dice che l'ha conosciuta "per davvero molto tempo, e ha visto molte delle cose che ha fatto. Penso che sia un'attrice davvero incredibile".
"Ma è divertente. Lei è molto più sicura. Non so se è brutto da dire, ma sono vedere lei essere così divertente . . . E io non lo so. C'è qualcosa di diverso che ho visto in lei e che io non realizzato che funziona davvero bene con la sua personalità e la sua abilità del set".
Pattinson sarà prossimamente in Queen Of The Desert, una biografia sull'esploratrice del 20esimo secondo Gertrude Bell, interpretata nel film da Nicole Kidman. Pattinson interpreterà il colonnello T.E. Lawrence, una parte interpretata da Peter O'Toole in Lawrence D'Arabia nel 1962. Il film è diretto dalla legenda tedesca Werner Herzog.
Alla domande su quale criterio usa per scegliere ruoli in questi giorni, Pattinson ammette: "Sì, io fondamentalmente ho degli strani problemi di insicurezza. Quindi voglio giocare d'azzardo il più possibile quando faccio i miei lavori. Quindi fondamentalmente io provo solo a lavora con autori estremamente prodigiosi e che è stato il mio unico processo decisionale".
Per quanto riguarda la sceneggiatura di autisti di lomousine, Pattinson dice che è stato avvicinato da molti.
"Mi hanno fatto un paio di volte. Più volte . . . molte, molte volte. Perfino qui", dice ridendo.
"Cosa hai fatto?", ho chiesto.
"Li prendo sempre", dice. "Posso strapparli più tardi".

The movie Pattinson is here to promote is Maps to the Stars. It is his second film with Canadian director David Cronenberg after 2012’s Cosmopolis. He was the lead in that film but has a secondary role in Maps, playing Jerome, a Hollywood limo driver with screenwriting ambitions. Mia Wasikowska (Only Lovers Left Alive) plays Agatha, a disfigured young woman with a secret connection to a high-powered Hollywood family, who employs Jerome to drive her around.
Maps to the Stars is written by Bruce Wagner. A former actor who co-starred with Maps co-star John Cusack in 1986’s One Crazy Summer, Wagner has gone on to become a respected novelist and screenwriter. He also used to work as a limo driver, making him, for all intents and purposes, some version of Jerome.
“I thought it was hilarious, and it was sort of dangerous,” Pattinson says of Wagner’s screenplay. “I quite liked the fact that - and David liked it as well - he’s this kind, genial, academic man. And then seeing the script, upon two pages of it, it’s so savage and jokes which you really don’t know how they are going to land at all or could have walk-outs quite easily. I just love feeling David’s glee with that.”
Pattinson says he only met Wagner after he had shot “quite a lot of stuff” on the film, which shot in Toronto and Los Angeles.
“But then I sort of talked to David about it because it’s a strange part. On the page he’s kind of a cipher for Bruce and almost a blank on the page. So I didn’t really want to reveal my ignorance.”
As for former model Wasikowska, Pattinson says he has known her “for a really long time, and I’ve seen a lot of her stuff as well. I think she’s a really amazing actress.
“But it’s funny, though. She’s gotten a lot more confident. I don’t know if that’s bad to say, but just seeing her be so funny… And I don’t know. There’s something different that I’ve seen in her that I didn’t realize that it works really well with her personality and skill-set.”
Pattinson will next be seen in Queen of the Desert, a biography of early 20th century explorer Gertrude Bell, played in the film by Nicole Kidman. Pattinson co-stars as Col T.E. Lawrence, a part first essayed by the late Peter O’Toole in 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia. The movie is directed by German legend Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Rescue Dawn).
Asked about his criteria for picking roles these days, Pattinson admits: “Yeah, I basically have some weird insecurity issues. So I want to take as little as a gamble as possible when doing my jobs. So I basically just try to work with extremely prodigious auteurs, and that’s kind of been my only decision-making process.”
As for screenwriting limo drivers, Pattinson says he has been accosted by several.
“I actually have a few times. Multiple times… Many, many times. Even here!” he says, laughing.
“What do you do?” I ask.
“I always take it,” he says. “I can rip them off later!”
